Alabama Sex Offender Registration and Community Notification Act (ASORCNA)

In Alabama, the primary law governing sex offenders is the Alabama Sex Offender Registration and Community Notification Act (ASORCNA).

Major Restrictions

Alabama has some of the strictest sex offender laws in the United States. Key provisions include:
  • The 2,000-Foot Rule: Adult sex offenders generally cannot live or work within 2,000 feet of a school, childcare facility, or youth camp.5
  • Living with Minors: Offenders are generally prohibited from residing with any minor, though there are narrow exceptions for their own children/grandchildren if the offender's victim was not a family member or a child under 12.
  • Travel Notification: Registered offenders must notify local law enforcement if they intend to be away from their residence for more than three days ($\S 15-20A-15$).
  • Identification: Offenders must carry a valid Alabama driver’s license or ID card that identifies them as a sex offender (6$\S 15-20A-18$).
